Many of the extras included in this special edition were recently discovered among the 4,000 episodes of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, stored 54 stories underground in a working salt mine outside of Kansas City. Believed to be one of the largest single television archives in the world, the film and video repository is naturally climate controlled and protected from both earthquakes and fire.
After an exhaustive search of this hidden vault and Carson Production's archive, treasures among this comprehensive collection started to emerge including: Black and white film from the early 1960's featuring Johnny pitching to N.Y. Yankees' legend, Mickey Mantle at an empty Yankee Stadium. A backstage tour of The Tonight Show in Burbank's Studio One. Johnny's script notes. Magazine covers. "More to Come" art. A tribute to Johnny, "Johnny Goes Home," the NBC special following Johnny's return to his hometown of Norfolk, Nebraska and more. Beyond the obvious entertainment value, the collection holds enormous historical significance as well.
