24 Years Ago, Johnny's Penultimate Show
Twenty-four years ago today, May 21st, 1992, Johnny Carson hosted his penultimate Tonight Show and his final show with guests. The Final show would air the following night and was a departure from the regular format (Monologue, Desk Segment, Guests, etc…), however this night would go down in history as the big event. Johnny welcomed two of the biggest stars of the era this night: Robin Williams and Bette Midler, who both would coincidentally enough, become Oscar nominees in a few months for 1991. There's a great article here about this famous night that is definitely worth reading. We've also posted a clip to wet your taste buds below. Now, if you haven't watched this show in awhile (if you're a Carson fan than you have to own it, it's been a highlight on The Ultimate Collection for years!) here's what we recommend to celebrate this wonderful anniversary. First watch the clip below, then read the Article mentioned above (here's the link again.) Now go to The Carson Podcast and listen to Mark Malkhoff's great podcast with Marc Shaiman who talks about how he played piano for Bette that night and how it was his idea for Bette to sing "One For My Baby". Here's the link to the podcast. And lastly pull out The Ultimate Collection DVD and watch the show again! It's a great way to remember this night of nights. Happy Anniversary!
